A major in Chinese is the gateway to the world’s most widely spoken language, to the rich and diverse traditions of a complex society, and to the modern culture of almost one-fourth of the world's population.
At UC Davis, you can study some of the oldest literature in history, explore traditional and modern poetry, literature and drama. By studying in small classes with highly skilled instructors and advanced educational technology, you will develop competency in written and spoken Mandarin, even with no prior knowledge of Chinese. You can also further your knowledge of China's literary and cultural heritage through study abroad in China, Taiwan or Hong Kong.
Chinese majors from UC Davis have gone on to careers in government, law, business, international affairs, journalism, teaching, information technologies, interpretation/translation and the tourism industry. The language skills and cultural literacy students acquire through a Chinese major are essential to their success in local and global spheres.
The major in Chinese concentrates on the study of language, literature and culture. With a minimum of nine quarters of language training, students gain a firm grounding in both spoken and written Chinese.
We also offer a diverse range of literature and culture courses taught in English, where students can explore everything from traditional poetry to modern fiction and contemporary popular culture. Student and pupils can also take advanced language classes where they read and discuss materials in the original language.
