What made you choose UC Davis?
UC Davis appeals to me for two significant reasons. I have great respect for Davis’ commitment to educational justice, equity and diversity, particularly as a public HSI (Hispanic Serving Institution). Secondly, I’m thrilled to join the nationally respected University Writing Program.
What inspires you?
Resilience. It reminds me what is possible when we focus on problem solving rather than on the problems alone.
What research are you currently working on? What makes it unique?
I’m beginning the fourth year of a longitudinal study of first-generation undergraduate STEM majors, particularly the evolution of their argumentation strategies and literacy practices that encourage their persistence in STEM fields. Our research team’s application of positive deviance to argumentation development in this particular student population strikes us as novel.
If you could impart one piece of advice to our undergraduates seeking a course of study/career path, what would it be?
There is more than one worthwhile, successful path for each person to walk. Learning to reframe problems so that we can access the most productive ways forward has been the essence of vocation for me.
When not in the classroom or conducting research, what do you like to do?
I’m outside, preferably near water.
Have you found your favorite spot on campus yet?
Yes – if Delta Venus can be counted as a part of campus!
If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
I’d like to be able to transport myself (and other people) to different places in space and time for the sake of adventure, empathy and peace.
