What made you choose UC Davis?
I chose Davis because I am intrigued and inspired by the think tank nature of the theatre and dance department here. We are creating critical thinkers, and the theater, the arts, the world, needs more of that! Bringing a curiosity and breadth and depth to any subject is refreshing. Bringing it to the performing arts is imperative!!
What inspires you?
It is a very strange thing. I call it a fickle lover! When you least expect it, the tsunami hits. When you are jonesing for it, and forcing the hand, it will leave you high and dry at the side of the road without a spare. That said, I tend to seek out the weepingly beautiful and eloquently sublime. Or the devastating rock bottom ugly and forgotten. Or the mundane simplicity. There is inspiration in everything, if you tilt the lens a little.
What research are you currently working on? What makes it unique?
I am currently running the Ground and Field Theatre Festival, a national new works play festival I created and am co-directing on campus. As an independent theater director from NYC, I know how important it is to have a place to read, hear, workshop and cultivate new works. This is my daily passion — new storytelling. This festival is a great resource for writers from all over the country, for the students chosen to work on this monthlong creative process, and for the community members that can come see these wonderful new works of theater.
If you could impart one piece of advice to our undergraduates seeking a course of study/career path, what would it be?
Always say yes, at this stage in your career and training. Say yes, and embrace the obstacles.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
I need to have the power of cloning myself. Or maybe just have someone develop the app asap!! I seem to always need to be in a few places at once, full throttle.
